Discount Broadway Tickets

How to obtain discounted Broadway tickets?

The only way to get a discount Broadway ticket is on the day of the performance itself.  If you have time, plan your day carefully and you might get $100 tickets for as low as $20!

There are 3 different ways to do this:

TKTS Booth

One of the most popular ways to get discount tickets to see Broadway and Off-Broadway productions is through the TKTS booths. The downside is that you have to wait on line, sometimes for an hour or more.

Tickets are available for same-day performances (with the exception of matinees, which are sold a day in advance at the Bowling Green location), generally at 50% or 25% off the full ticket price. There is also a $3 per ticket service charge. Available shows are posted on marquees outside the ticket booth. The shows available changes not only from day to day, but from hour to hour. There are often tickets released to TKTS immediately before shows open at 8 p.m.

Locations of the two booths and hours are as follows:

Times Square Theatre Center
47th Street & Broadway
Monday through Saturday (for evening performances) 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Wednesday & Saturday (for matinee tickets) 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Sunday (for matinee & evening tickets) 11:00 a.m. to evening (varies with show times)
Subways: A,C,E,1,9,N,R,W,7

Downtown Theatre Center
Resnick-Prudential Building
199 Water Street
Corner of Front & John Streets
Monday to Saturday 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Sunday 11:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

(At this location, matinee tickets must be bought a day in advance. Wednesday matinees on sale on Tuesday; Saturday matinees on sale on Friday; Sunday matinees on sale on Saturday.)

Rush Tickets

Rush tickets are normally available either when the box office opens or a few hours before the production starts. Rush tickets are normally about $20-25 each. Sometimes a student ID is required to purchase tickets (though often with one student ID, two tickets can be purchased). Many times, box offices will only accept cash as payment for rush tickets, so arrive at the box office prepared.

With so many variables depending on the production and box office rules, the most accurate information can be found out about rush tickets by calling the box office for the particular show you'd like to see.  All you need to do is ask and they will be happy to tell you all the details including whether you need a student ID to obtain a rush ticket and how many are being sold per person.  Again you MUST get there a few hours before the box office opens, since there are only a very limited amount of those tickets being offered.

SRO Tickets

Standing Room Only (SRO) tickets are exactly that.  You pay a small fee to see the show in a designated standing area.  If you don't mind standing then this can be a great option for you.  The only thing is that they only offer SRO tickets if the show is sold out.  So I recommend to call the theater and ask them specifically if they think that there will be SRO tickets for that day and if so when do they start selling them.  As I recommend with the Rush Tickets, get there a couple of hours earlier in order to get a good place in line.

Premium tickets for sold out shows

If you are in NY for only a limited time and you don't have the time to save money on tickets and you promised you loving partner or family that you will get tickets this is what to do:

  1. Call the theater:  They still might have some tickets left for the date that you need (you never know)

  2. Call a ticket broker:  Ticket brokers buy and sell tickets on the open market.  Often you can find the best tickets for the sold out shows at these brokers.  This is completely legal.  However, you must choose a reputable ticket broker that has been in the business for years and belongs to the Better Business Bureau.  We highly recommend TicketsNow.com.  Another good broker to check out is openseats.com that offers also classifieds of private individuals who are selling tickets.

More Info:

The 39 venues designated as Broadway theatres are located in a relatively small geographic region. With only a couple of exceptions, Broadway theaters are located in the area between 41st Street and 52nd Street, and between Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue) and Eighth Avenue.

Broadway productions are often enormous in scale, costing millions to produce, and sometimes feature some of the most popular and entertaining actors in the world. The sets and costumes are usually quite extravagant, and the musicals usually feature orchestras of ten to thirty musicians.
